Whenchangingyouraperturetodefocusthebackground,thelightsourcesappearblurred.This‘bokeh’effectoftheblurredbackgroundcanbeenhancedwithcircularaperturebladesusedinthislens.Conventionalaperturebladeshaveflatsidescreatingunappealingpolygonalshapeddefocussedpointsoflight.αlensesovercomethisproblemthroughauniquedesignthatkeepstheaperturealmostperfectlycircularfromitswide-opensettingtowhenitisclosedby2stops.Smoother,morenaturaldefocusingcanbeobtainedasaresult.

Asfocallengthsgetlonger,lensesbuiltwithconventionalopticalglasshavedifficultieswithchromaticaberration,andasaresultimagessufferfromlowercontrast,lowercolorquality,andlowerresolution.EDglassdramaticallyreduceschromaticaberrationattelephotoranges,andprovidessuperiorcontrastacrosstheentireimage,evenatlargeaperturesettings.SuperEDglassprovidesenhancedcompensationforchromaticaberration.

Asphericallensdesigndramaticallyreducessphericalaberrationwhilealsoreducinglenssizeandweight.Sphericalaberrationisaslightmisalignmentofthelightraysprojectedontheimageplane.Thisiscausedbydifferencesinrefractionatdifferentpointsonconventionalsphericallenseswhichdegradeimagequalityinlarge-aperturelenses.Speciallyshaped“aspherical”elementsnearthediaphragmrestorealignmentoflightraysattheimageplane,maintaininghighsharpnessandcontrastevenatmaximumapertureandcanalsobeusedatotherpointsintheopticalpathtoreducedistortion.Well-designedasphericalelementscanreducethetotalnumberofelementsrequiredinthelens,thusreducingoverallsizeandweight.AdvancedAspherical(AA)elementsareanevolvedvariant,featuringanextremelyhighthicknessratiobetweenthecenterandperiphery.AAelementsareexceedinglydifficulttoproduce,relyingonthemostadvancedmoldingtechnologytoconsistentlyandpreciselyachievetherequiredshapeandsurfaceaccuracy,resultinginsignificantlyimprovedimageaccuracyandquality.
